The Princeton Post 218 American Legion squad has found a new spark this summer, driven by sophomore shortstop Asa Collins. Batting at the top of the order and anchoring the defense, Collins has turned a modest freshman debut into a standout campaign that has the team eyeing a playoff spot.
From Struggles to Momentum
Collins entered his freshman year at Princeton High with a tentative swing, but a series of adjustments at the plate and in the field quickly rewrote his trajectory. He finished the previous season batting .316 with 24 hits, 12 runs and 11 RBIs, and the experience has translated into a more confident approach on the diamond.
In a recent clash with Allentown, Collins demonstrated his leadoff instincts by working a walk and stealing a base in the opening inning, helping Princeton surge to a three‑run first frame. Although the team fell 8‑5, the performance underscored his ability to generate early momentum.
A Manager’s Praise
First‑year manager Judd Petrone has repeatedly highlighted Collins’ impact, noting that the shortstop’s speed and baseball IQ have lifted the entire clubhouse. ‘He’s a catalyst,’ Petrone said after the Allentown loss, citing Collins’ defensive reliability and clutch baserunning as key factors in the team’s recent uptick.
Supporting pieces such as Chase Lau, Casey Daigneault and Nate Nydick have complemented Collins’ contributions, while reliever Matt Brophy’s five strikeouts against Allentown added depth to the pitching staff. The collective effort has already doubled the win total from last season, moving the club to a 5‑12 record.
Looking Ahead
With a July 16 showdown against Hamilton Post 31 on the horizon, the squad is focused on translating its summer progress into postseason contention. Collins, now aiming to be a steadying presence for his teammates, believes the experience gained in Legion ball will carry over into his sophomore year at Princeton High.
