Hubert Oliphant, a former Border hockey stalwart, has been quietly reshaping the sporting landscape of Qonce since 2019. At Breidbach Primary School, his modified hockey programme welcomes children of all abilities, providing a safe space where the love of the game can blossom without the pressure of elite competition.
Oliphant and his volunteer coaching team guide players from under‑9 to under‑18, tailoring drills that match each age group’s developmental stage. What began as a single session on a modest field has grown into a network of modified hockey hubs in Tsholomnqa, Mdantsane and Komani, drawing participants from neighbouring towns and even from across the border.
A Vision Rooted in Community
With more than four decades of involvement in hockey, Oliphant believes that true excellence starts at the foundation phase. His philosophy centres on skill acquisition, teamwork and personal growth, values that echo through every session at Breidbach. The programme’s expansion to nearby areas reflects a deliberate effort to reach children who might otherwise never experience the sport.
Securing a second‑hand artificial surface for the school was a pivotal moment, allowing for more consistent training and opening pathways for players to compete at higher levels. Yet the initiative remains financially fragile, relying on regular fundraising events to cover equipment, travel and maintenance costs.
Beyond the Pitch
For many families, the impact stretches far beyond athletic ability. Parents such as Ricardo Frits have reported marked improvements in their children’s confidence, discipline and school attendance. The programme also offers rare international training opportunities, giving participants a glimpse of hockey’s global stage.
Oliphant’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. He received a nomination for Volunteer of the Year at the South African Sports Awards, and Gary Dolley, a longtime colleague, put his name forward for the Daily Dispatch Local Heroes Awards, praising Oliphant’s relentless commitment to youth development.
Looking Ahead
The ripple effect of Oliphant’s work is evident in the selection of several programme alumni for Border provincial teams, a testament to the quality of coaching and the talent nurtured within the community. As the initiative continues to evolve, Oliphant remains focused on expanding access, securing sustainable funding and inspiring the next generation of hockey leaders.
