A new era for Michigan basketball
Mike Boynton Jr. steps into the role of Michigan’s head coach with a clear mandate: preserve the program’s soaring standards after a historic run that saw the Wolverines finish a franchise‑record 37‑3, capture the Big Ten title and hoist a national championship.
The foundation of that success was built on a deep, talented backcourt, and Boynton is adamant that the team will lean on the returning duo of Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, whom he describes as among the best in the country.
Thirteen of the 14 scholarship players from the championship roster will be back, giving the coach continuity and the chemistry that helped the Wolverines dominate the conference.
However, the frontcourt will feel the absence of several key contributors who have declared for the NBA draft, a shift that will test the depth of the squad and force younger players to step up.
Guard L.J. Cason, who transferred to Miami, is currently recuperating from a torn ACL, adding another layer of uncertainty to the backcourt’s health heading into the new season.
