A Fresh Leadership Era at Pensacola State College
Kayla Gordon has been appointed as the new head coach of the Pensacola State College women's basketball program, taking over from longtime mentor Clenita Bedford. The announcement comes as the college looks to build on recent competitive successes and to reinforce its commitment to developing student‑athletes both on and off the court.
Gordon's journey to the PSC sidelines has been marked by stints at two prominent programs. She served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Mississippi, where she helped guide the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in the 2024‑25 season. Prior to that, she spent three seasons at Jacksonville University, first as a player and later as an assistant, overseeing recruitment and player development.
Her playing career at Jacksonville University was nothing short of historic. From 2014 to 2018 she amassed over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, cementing her status as the program's all‑time leading rebounder. Those performances earned her multiple conference honors and a reputation as a relentless force in the paint.
Building on Recent Momentum
The Pensacola State women's team concluded the 2025‑26 season with a 15‑14 record, a milestone that set the stage for Gordon's arrival. The program's recent progress, combined with her proven ability to attract talent, positions the team to aim for a deeper postseason run under her guidance.
Beyond X's and O's, Gordon emphasizes a holistic approach to player development. She has spoken openly about fostering a culture that balances competitive drive with personal growth, ensuring that each athlete can thrive academically and socially while sharpening their basketball skills.
Her professional experience also includes a season in Europe, where she played for Kronos in Greece and posted a single‑game high of 31 points. That international exposure has equipped her with a broader perspective on the game and a readiness to implement innovative strategies.
Coaching Philosophy and Vision
Gordon's vision centers on empowering each player to reach their full potential, both on the hardwood and in the classroom. She plans to blend disciplined defensive schemes with an up‑tempo offensive style, creating an exciting brand of basketball that reflects the college's spirit.
Community engagement is another cornerstone of her plan. By strengthening ties with local fans and launching outreach initiatives, Gordon hopes to make the Pensacola State women's program a focal point of regional pride and support.
