A Night of Community and Competition
The Kansas City Current have scheduled a high‑profile encounter with Racing Louisville FC for July 29, a match that will serve as the centerpiece of a broader celebration of soccer and local culture.
Presented by Bank of America, the evening will be designated Soccer at Schools Night, an initiative that aims to bring the sport to every classroom by 2030. As part of the program, 23 Title I schools in the Kansas City area will receive new equipment kits, a effort coordinated with the Soccer Forward Foundation.
The festivities will extend beyond the pitch, featuring a lineup of Black artists and cultural groups. Local creator River Makenzi will debut a match‑specific merchandise piece, while Kansas City hip‑hop artist and DJ “The Royal Chief” will perform his original anthem “Teal Town.” Historically Black fraternities and sororities are slated to showcase strolls on Current Landing, and the youth step team STEP Movement will deliver a pre‑match routine.
The event will also honor the 2026 Co‑Miss Juneteenth KC awardees, S’Yarre Dunning and Alena Kirk, and will keep Vine Street Brewing, Kansas City’s first Black‑owned brewery, on tap for fans. Ruby Jean’s Juicery founder Christoper Goode is set to lead the pre‑match KC Baby Chant, adding a community voice to the kickoff.
During halftime, media members will compete in the fifth annual Kansas City Current Media Game, with Michelle Akers, a two‑time World Cup champion, serving as the Celebrity Referee. Akers will also be on hand as part of Bank of America’s Soccer with Us platform, underscoring the match’s connection to broader outreach goals.
