The University of Portland announced the addition of forward Javier Hernandez to its men's soccer roster for the 2026 campaign, a move that promises to deepen an already potent attack.
Hernandez arrives after a standout high school career at Arlington High School in California, where he set a school record with 34 goals and earned the 2023‑24 Gatorade California Boys Soccer Player of the Year honor.
A proven scorer with national recognition
The Pilots have built momentum over the past season, posting a 14‑2‑4 record that marked their best winning percentage since 1988 and earned an 8‑seed in the NCAA Tournament, ultimately advancing to the Elite Eight.
That run was supported by a national No. 1 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and eight selections in the MLS SuperDraft over the last three years, underscoring the program’s pipeline to professional soccer.
Hernandez’s collegiate experience includes stints with the North Carolina Tar Heels and the LAFC academy, where he honed his craft in the MLS NextPro league, scoring six goals and delivering a hat‑trick for LAFC 2.
His versatility and finishing ability are expected to complement the Pilots’ tactical approach, giving head coach Mike Berticelli additional options up front as the team looks to maintain its top‑tier status.
The club also continues to benefit from international exposure, with three players recently invited to U.S. Men’s National Team camps, a testament to the program’s growing influence on the national stage.
