A New Era for the Seawolves
Matt Richards, who has guided Southern Maine Community College’s men’s basketball team for more than two decades, announced his retirement this week, bringing to a close a 23‑year tenure that reshaped the program from obscurity to national prominence.
Under Richards’s direction the Seawolves captured the USCAA Division II championship in 2022 and added a Yankee Small College Conference title just last season, moments that capped a career built on steady reconstruction and relentless competitiveness.
His successor, Ian Regan, arrives after a stint as a film analyst and player development coach, having graduated from SMCC in 2022 and spent the past year dissecting opponents and mentoring younger athletes.
Preserving the Family‑Driven Identity
Regan has said his priority is to safeguard the family‑oriented, alumni‑driven culture that Richards cultivated, a philosophy that emphasizes community involvement as much as on‑court success.
While the team fell in the quarterfinals of the USCAA Division II tournament to Miami‑Hamilton, the program remains poised for continued growth, with Richards pledging to stay involved in an advisory capacity.
The college’s athletic director role, which Richards also filled before assuming the chief of institutional advancement post, underscores the intertwined nature of leadership at SMCC, where former players often return to shape the next chapter.
Zachary Mickle, a longtime assistant and recruiting coordinator, will continue to support the transition, ensuring that the program’s strategic vision stays aligned with its foundational values.
