A Deepening Partnership
American University's men's basketball program has announced an expansion of its collaboration with Life Pieces To Masterpieces, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that has spent three decades shaping character and leadership among young men in Wards 7 and 8.
The partnership, now in its third year, centers on LPTM's Basketball and Beyond initiative, which blends basketball instruction with academic enrichment, mentorship and personal development for 50 middle‑school participants at no cost.
AU student‑athletes and coaches will lend their expertise through summer basketball clinics, hands‑on instruction and community outreach, reinforcing the program's dual focus on sport and scholarship.
The collaboration recently received a $25,000 grant from Monumental Sports & Entertainment's District of Play youth sports campaign, underscoring external recognition of the program's impact.
This expansion builds on a relationship that dates back years, when AU students first connected with LPTM through the DC Reads tutoring initiative and the university began supporting the nonprofit with volunteer efforts, campus programming and community partnerships.
Over time, the tie‑in has grown through AU Athletics, including grocery and food drives, campus visits for LPTM youth, and the invitation of LPTM apprentices to Coach Duane Simpkins' summer basketball camp.
Beyond the Game
Coach Duane Simpkins emphasizes that the responsibility of student‑athletes extends far beyond the hardwood, noting that the meaningful relationships forged with LPTM participants reflect a shared commitment to serving the District's young people.
Mary Brown, a longtime advocate for the program, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the transformative potential of mentorship that pairs athletic development with life‑skill building.
