A Strategic Appointment
Syracuse University announced the hiring of Brian Idalski as its new head coach for the women's hockey program, a move that signals the school's ambition to compete at the highest level of collegiate play. Idalski, who most recently led the Czech Republic's women's national team and previously coached in the Premier Women's Hockey League, brings a blend of international exposure and deep NCAA roots.
Idalski's coaching résumé includes stints at NCAA Division I powerhouses St. Cloud State and the University of North Dakota, where he earned multiple Coach of the Year honors. His tenure behind the bench at the Olympic Games with China further demonstrates his ability to work across continents and cultures, a skill set he plans to leverage in building a diverse and competitive roster at Syracuse.
Leveraging Existing Talent
The Orange already boast four alumni who are active in the Professional Women's Hockey League: Allie Munroe, Jessica DiGirolamo, Shiann Darkangelo and Mae Batherson. Munroe and DiGirolamo, who captained the team during their collegiate careers, provide leadership and a proven track record of excellence. Their presence, combined with the upcoming participation of free‑agent invitees Rhea Hicks and Sarah Marchand in PWHL training camps, creates a foundation on which Idalski can build immediate credibility.
Idalski has articulated a clear vision: to develop the team's latent potential, instill a culture of accountability and push the program into the Atlantic Hockey America conference with a realistic shot at contention. He emphasized that recruiting stronger talent is a priority, noting that the current roster offers a springboard for attracting top prospects who can thrive in a system that values both skill and discipline.
Looking Ahead
As the new coaching staff begins its work, the university community anticipates a transformative season. With a blend of seasoned leadership, international perspective and a commitment to competitive growth, Brian Idalski is poised to guide Syracuse women's hockey toward a future defined by sustained success and heightened visibility on the national stage.
