A strategic reshaping of the program
Sam Houston State University's women's basketball program received a boost this week as head coach Ravon Justice unveiled two new additions to her coaching staff for the upcoming 2026‑27 season. The announcements, made during a virtual press conference, highlight the hiring of veteran recruiter Steven Gilbert and rising development specialist Zavior Alvarez.
Gilbert, who most recently served as video coordinator for Syracuse during a 24‑8 campaign that culminated in an NCAA Tournament Round of 32 appearance, brings a blend of analytical insight and on‑court experience. Prior to that role he headed the Ranger College program for three seasons, guiding the team to a 27‑3 record in 2021‑22 and earning a reputation for turning raw talent into polished performers.
Alvarez joins after two seasons at Gulf Coast State College, where his work contributed to a 42‑16 overall record for the Lady Commodores. He also spent time as an assistant with the Nevada Wolf Pack, helping the squad finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference with a .500 record. His coaching journey began as a practice player and undergraduate assistant at UTEP, where he earned a Business Administration degree before completing a master's in Justice Management at Nevada.
Both hires reflect Justice's intent to deepen the program's recruiting pipeline and enhance player development. Gilbert's extensive network across Texas and the Southeast, combined with Alvarez's proven track record of elevating mid‑major programs, are expected to strengthen the Bearkats' competitiveness in the Southland Conference.
The university's athletic director praised the additions, noting that the new staff members embody the university's commitment to growth and excellence. With the 2026‑27 season on the horizon, the coaching staff is poised to build on recent successes and aim for a conference title.
