Shannon Miller Named Head Coach of Swiss Women's National Team
Shannon Miller has been appointed head coach of the Swiss women's national hockey team, with a contract that runs through the summer of 2029. The announcement was made by Swiss Hockey officials, who highlighted her proven track record of building championship programs and her deep connections to European talent.
Miller's résumé includes 16 seasons at Minnesota Duluth, where she guided the Bulldogs to five NCAA titles between 2001 and 2010, a stretch that cemented her reputation as one of the most successful coaches in women's college hockey. Her teams were known for disciplined play, strong defensive structures, and a relentless work ethic that translated into multiple conference coach of the year awards.
Her tenure at UMD ended amid a high‑profile lawsuit alleging sex discrimination and Title IX retaliation; Miller prevailed in federal court in March 2018 and later settled with the university for $4.5 million in December 2019. The settlement concluded a lengthy legal battle that had drawn national attention to issues of gender equity in collegiate athletics.
After the settlement, she spent the 2018‑19 season coaching the Calgary Inferno in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and helped launch the American Hockey League’s Coachella Valley Firebirds, where she held a front‑office role overseeing player development and scouting.
Miller also previously coached Canada's national and Olympic programs, earning a silver medal at the 1998 Olympics, and she remains a respected figure in international women's hockey. Her experience with both North American and European talent pools made her an attractive candidate for a national program seeking a fresh direction.
The Swiss roster is led by Lara Stalder, a longtime UMD teammate of Miller who captains the national side and will now work directly under her new head coach.
