Gotham FC announced on Tuesday that forward Esther Gonzalez and the club have mutually terminated her contract, allowing the Spanish forward to step away from professional soccer as she returns to personal matters in Spain.
A Legacy Defined by Excellence
During her two‑year stint, Gonzalez became the club’s all‑time leading scorer with 33 goals, a tally that includes two NWSL championships, a Concacaf W Champions Cup, and an NWSL Challenge Cup.
She arrived in late summer 2023 and instantly made an impact, scoring the decisive goal in the 2023 NWSL Championship and finishing second in the 2025 Golden Boot race with 13 goals.
Her 22 goals and five assists over two seasons led the team in scoring both years, and she recorded nine braces, tying Megan Rapinoe for the most braces at a single club.
Gotham FC president Yael Averbuch West said the organization is grateful for Gonzalez’s professionalism and leadership, noting that her contributions have left an indelible mark on the club’s culture.
Beyond club success, Gonzalez brings a decorated international résumé, having been part of Spain’s 2023 World Cup‑winning squad and a Euro runner‑up, experiences she says will continue to shape her next chapter.
