The Philadelphia Flyers announced a new collaboration with the Greater Philadelphia YMCA that brings the Flyers Hooked on Hockey program to summer camps across the region. The initiative, overseen by the Flyers Alumni and the team’s Community Relations department, introduces elementary-aged children to ball hockey through hands‑on clinics.
Gritty’s Summer Appearance
On July 27, Gritty, the Flyers’ beloved mascot, made a surprise visit to the camp at Temple Ambler, where he interacted with campers, signed autographs and helped launch the first session of the ball‑hockey curriculum.
Bryan Ford, association sports director at the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, highlighted the program’s broader goals, noting that the clinics are designed to boost confidence, foster teamwork and encourage healthy habits among participants.
More Than a Game
Beyond the physical activity, organizers say the program uses the excitement of hockey to teach life skills that translate to the classroom and the community. By pairing professional alumni with youth leaders, the Flyers aim to create lasting connections that keep kids engaged long after the summer ends.
The partnership will extend the Hooked on Hockey experience to three additional Y camp sites, giving more children the chance to try the sport in a supportive environment.
