Rather than chase a professional career, Blanchard elected to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army. He would later fly more than a hundred missions over Vietnam, earning an Air Force commendation for safely landing a burning aircraft that threatened a nearby village.
His wartime record includes 113 combat flights and a daring rescue that prevented a crash into a civilian settlement, a story that has become part of his legend. Sportswriters have drawn parallels between his on‑field versatility and that of modern star Travis Hunter, who similarly juggles multiple roles.
