A New Format for State Title Games
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has unveiled its schedule for the 2027 baseball and softball season, culminating in state championships that will bring together the best teams from the north and south.
Under the new structure, the champion of each regional bracket will square off in a single‑game championship for every division, mirroring the format already used in basketball and several other sports.
The finals will be staged across divisions one through five, giving smaller schools a chance to compete on the same stage as larger programs. Venues include sites throughout the state, with the championship games slated to be held in Butte Valley, California, United States, a location that has previously hosted regional tournaments.
Implications for Players and Programs
Executives from the California Interscholastic Federation say the change is meant to increase competition and give teams a clear path to the title. “We’re excited to see how this format will shape the next generation of talent,” a CIF spokesperson said.
Among the players to watch are Rylie McInturf, Camile Murphy and Rebecca Brutlag, who have each earned All‑State honors in recent seasons and are expected to lead their squads into the upcoming playoffs.
