Researchers from Imperial College London and the UK Dementia Research Institute presented their findings at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2026, revealing that former elite soccer players who spent years heading the ball exhibit subtle structural brain changes. The investigation compared 142 retired professionals with 56 healthy controls.

The former players reported significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety and executive dysfunction, and showed reduced gray matter volume in frontal, cingulate and thalamic regions. Despite these symptomatic differences, objective cognitive testing did not demonstrate statistically significant disparities between the groups.

Long‑Term Monitoring Plan

Although the study did not identify immediate clinical implications, the authors emphasized the need for ongoing surveillance of former players. Participants will undergo repeat brain imaging and psychological evaluations every two years to track how repeated head impacts may influence brain health over time.
