A historic draft night for Northwestern baseball
Northwestern University announced that two of its standout baseball players, Ryan Kucherak and Jack Lausch, have been selected in the latest Major League Baseball Draft, marking the first time Wildcats have been drafted since 2021.
Kucherak, a rising senior who transferred from Louisiana State University, was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the 15th round with the 455th overall pick. He set a new program record with 18 home runs in the 2025 season and posted an on‑base plus slugging percentage above .900 in both of his years at Northwestern, earning Third Team All‑Big Ten honors for 2026.
Lausch, who began his collegiate career on the football field before switching to baseball in 2025, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 17th round with the 512th pick. Over his two seasons he hit 22 home runs, drove in a team‑high 56 runs, and helped the Wildcats capture the Big Ten title, while also posting a career fielding percentage of 98.8%.
Both athletes were recognized with Third Team All‑Big Ten selections, and Lausch additionally received the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, underscoring his impact beyond the diamond.

Coach Ben Greenspan will now guide a rebuilding squad for the 2027 season without the departed stars, a transition that could reshape the team's dynamics as the program looks to build on its recent successes.
