The 2026 MLB Draft wrapped up in Philadelphia during the MLB All-Star break, and the University of Texas baseball program celebrated a historic achievement: six Longhorns were selected, continuing a streak that has seen at least one player drafted every year since 1965.
Day one brings early excitement
Junior catcher Carson Tinney became the first Texas player taken, sliding to the Minnesota Twins with the 43rd overall pick. Shortly after, junior outfielder Aiden Robbins was chosen 92nd overall by the New York Mets, and senior pitcher Ruger Riojas rounded out the first‑day action at No. 100 overall, landing with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The second day kept the momentum alive as junior pitcher Thomas Burns was drafted 227th overall by the Twins, graduate pitcher Luke Harrison went 234th to the St. Louis Cardinals, and redshirt senior pitcher Cody Howard was selected 376th by the Washington Nationals.
Coach Schlossnagle’s growing legacy
Head coach Jim Schlossnagle has been at the helm for just two seasons, yet his impact is already evident. In total, 11 Longhorns have been drafted under his leadership, a testament to the program’s rapid ascent and the talent pipeline he is cultivating.
The selections underscore Texas’ continued relevance on the national stage. With three players cracking the top 100 and several more poised to make an impact in the minor leagues, the program appears poised to sustain its upward trajectory.
