Tanner Nichols, a senior forward from Madison Central High School, has been crowned the Mississippi Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year, a distinction that underscores his pivotal role in the team’s recent dominance.
A Season of Excellence
Under his leadership the Jaguars captured two consecutive MHSAA Class 7A championships, finishing the latest season unbeaten at 21‑0‑2 while posting a 20‑goal, nine‑assist tally that helped secure the top spot in the state and the fourth national ranking according to MaxPreps.
Nichols also guided Madison Central to a 17‑3‑1 record and the 7A title as a junior, a feat that placed him among the elite prospects nationally and earned him a No. 1 ranking in Mississippi and a No. 4 spot in the country.
Impact Beyond the Pitch
Beyond his on‑field achievements, Nichols has maintained an A average in the classroom, served as a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and volunteered as a youth soccer coach for Mississippi Rush and Brilla, participating in numerous community service initiatives.
Leadership Recognized
Coach Seth Male praised Nichols’s character, work ethic and ability to elevate teammates, while athletic director Toby Collums highlighted the award’s positive ripple effect on the program and the broader athletic department. Northwest Rankin coach Chris Gardner also commended Nichols’s talent and deserving nature of the honor.
Family Roots and Future Outlook
Nichols comes from a family steeped in athletics; his mother Robyn excelled in basketball and soccer, his father Jason played baseball and football, and his brothers Thomas and Jude have each distinguished themselves in baseball, football and multiple sports at local schools. Looking ahead, Nichols plans to continue his academic and athletic pursuits at the collegiate level, eyeing programs that align with his goals at LSU, Loyola College Prep, Belhaven and other institutions.
