John Davidson, a longtime presence in professional hockey, announced on Monday that he will take on the role of senior adviser with the Buffalo Sabres. The move marks the latest chapter in a career that has spanned playing, broadcasting and executive positions across the NHL.
A familiar partnership resurfaces
The appointment reunites Davidson with Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, whom he previously worked alongside in Columbus. Their collaboration there laid the groundwork for a professional relationship that both men say has been instrumental in shaping team strategy.
Davidson’s tenure with the New York Rangers is marked by several high‑profile roles. He began as a player, later served as team president, and was dismissed on May 5, 2021. Just weeks after his departure, he rejoined the Blue Jackets as president and alternate governor before adding a general manager title when he oversaw the firing of Kekalainen in May 2024.
Beyond the front office, Davidson earned recognition as a television analyst, capturing the Lester Patrick Trophy and the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his contributions to the sport’s growth and storytelling.
In October 2024, he returned to the broadcast booth to cover select Blue Jackets games, demonstrating his continued relevance in hockey media. His voice, familiar to fans across North America, now joins the Sabres’ organizational voice as they navigate a transitional period.
