A Legendary Voice Falls Silent
Joe Smith, a revered figure in Indiana University sports broadcasting, died at the age of 78, leaving a void in the world of college athletics.
For four decades he was the audible heartbeat of IU games, delivering play‑by‑play commentary that guided listeners through football and men’s basketball contests from 1983 onward.
Before stepping onto the radio, Smith honed his craft in television, producing pregame and halftime segments that prepared audiences for the action on the field and court.
Honors and Hall of Fame Inductions
His contributions earned him the Indiana Sportscaster of the Year award in 1998, followed by induction into the Indiana Sportswriters/Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
In June 2004 he received the J.W. Bill Orwig Medal, recognizing distinguished service to Indiana University, and later in 2020 he was presented with a university Bicentennial Medal by President Michael McRobbie.
Smith retired from the IU Radio Network in 2022, yet continued to appear on airwaves until his passing, a testament to his enduring connection with the community.
He is survived by his two children, Jeff and Jamie, and six grandchildren, who carry forward the legacy of a man described as professional, joyful, and deeply dedicated to his craft.
Colleagues and fans alike remember Smith not only for his technical skill but also for the warmth and enthusiasm he brought to every broadcast, a quality that defined his career and inspired many.
