A Milestone Season Looms
The Football Championship Subdivision is gearing up for its 49th season in 2026, a year that feels both historic and forward‑looking. With each program vying for playoff positioning, the spotlight has turned to a curated list of 49 athletes who could shape the narrative on the field.
Among the storylines, Beau Brungard stands out as the only player attempting to capture back‑to‑back Walter Payton Awards, a feat not achieved since the 2016‑17 season. His pursuit adds a compelling thread to a season already rich with individual milestones.
Eli Gillman, the reigning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and a Jerry Rice Award winner, brings a high‑octane receiving corps to the forefront, while Marquis Buchanan topped the FCS in receiving yards last year, underscoring his role as a primary target.
On the defensive side, Joshua Stoneking led the division in sacks and tackles for loss in 2025, positioning him as a disruptive force along the line. His performance is echoed by Tye Niekamp, a unanimous First‑Team All‑American who amassed 160 tackles in 2025, and Caden Dowler, who logged the most interceptions in the FCS that same year.
The defensive line depth extends beyond Stoneking. Players such as Lance Rucker, who recorded 11.5 sacks in 2025, and Michael Wells, who posted 10.5 sacks, highlight a competitive edge for their respective programs. Erik Gray earned Southland Offensive Lineman of the Year honors, while Joshua Sales Jr. proved versatile by starting at both tackle positions.
South Dakota State and Montana State continue to develop elite offensive line talent, with Liam Becher anchoring the left side of North Dakota’s line alongside four returning starters. The pipeline of skilled linemen suggests a balanced battle in the trenches throughout the season.
Beyond individual statistics, narrative threads connect several players. The brotherly tandem of Caden and Taco Dowler is touted as the most compelling duo in the FCS for 2026, while Abu Kamara’s 76 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions illustrate a well‑rounded impact. Kam Sallis of Jackson State also contributed 53 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
The season also brings fresh eligibility to Rex Connors, a safety who returns to the FCS after an extended period of eligibility was granted. His presence adds depth to a secondary that already features standout performances from players like Peyton Wing, who helped Montana reach the FCS semifinals with 78 tackles and four interceptions.
Off the field, several athletes are making waves in the NFL draft conversation. Desmeal Leigh, Christopher Jean and others are projected as top prospects, suggesting that the 2026 campaign could serve as a springboard for professional opportunities.
