John Bannister, a Tucson native and Sabino High School alumnus, has been named the new head coach of the Tanque Verde High School baseball program, bringing a blend of professional experience and local roots to the Eagles.
A Southern Arizona Homecoming
After a distinguished amateur career in Southern Arizona, Bannister signed professional contracts that took him through the farm systems of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. He concluded his playing days with the Tucson Toros, an independent franchise that gave him a final platform to showcase his pitching talent.
The Tanque Verde baseball program has emerged as one of the most consistent contenders in Arizona’s 3A Conference, earning back‑to‑back playoff berths and climbing as high as the No. 1 ranking in the state. This trajectory of growth and competitiveness made the position an attractive opportunity for a coach who understands the local baseball culture.
Leadership Praise
Athletic director Pat Nugent highlighted Bannister’s background and his passion for developing young athletes, noting that his firsthand experience as a player gives him a unique perspective on mentorship. Principal Dr. Amy Cislak added that his leadership and mentorship qualities align perfectly with the school’s vision for a holistic baseball program.
Bannister’s appointment signals a new chapter aimed at elevating the Eagles to even greater heights. With a clear focus on player development, strategic planning, and community engagement, the program looks poised to build on its recent successes and contend for championships in the coming seasons.
