A Fresh Coaching Landscape in Ann Arbor
Mike Martin, the former longtime head coach of Brown University's basketball program, has accepted an assistant coaching position on the University of Michigan's staff, where he will work under new head coach Mike Boynton Jr.
Martin brings a decade and a half of leadership at Brown, where he compiled a record that includes five Ivy League top‑half finishes and a program‑changing 20‑win season in 2018‑19 that culminated in the school's first ever postseason victory.
His ascent began as an assistant at Brown before a six‑year stint at Penn, and in 2012 he took over as head coach at the age of 29, quickly becoming the fourth‑youngest Division I head coach in the nation and eventually the winningest coach in Brown's 120‑year history.
Boynton, who was hired to reshape the Wolverines' culture, praised Martin's blend of coaching acumen, teaching ability and recruiting savvy, saying that Martin's values align tightly with the direction the program is taking.
Martin expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating his excitement to join the Michigan basketball family and to collaborate with the student‑athletes as the staff welcomes several new faces this summer.
