A Sudden Departure
Mike Martin, who has steered Brown’s men’s basketball program for the past 13 years, announced that he will depart the university to join the coaching staff at the University of Michigan, where he will work under head coach Mike Boynton.
Martin, appointed to the position in 2012 at the age of 29, became the winningest coach in Brown history with 171 victories, guiding the Bears to a 20‑win season, a postseason triumph over Alabama‑Birmingham in the College Basketball Invitational, and a runner‑up finish in the Ivy League Championship Game during the 2023‑24 campaign.
A Grateful Farewell
In a statement released through Brown’s athletics department, Martin expressed deep gratitude for the relationships he forged with players, staff, alumni and the broader community, noting that the experience had been “one of the most meaningful chapters” of his career.
Samuel M. Mencoff, Brown’s vice president for Athletics and Recreation, called the departure a “bittersweet moment” and praised Martin’s leadership, saying his impact will be felt for years to come.

The move places Martin alongside Mike Boynton, the new head coach at Michigan, who has assembled a staff aimed at building on the Wolverines’ recent resurgence. Martin’s hiring is seen as a strategic addition to Michigan’s rebuilding effort.
