A Hall of Fame Legacy
Orlando “Tubby” Smith, the architect of the University of Kentucky’s 1998 NCAA championship run, has been selected for the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2026 class, a testament to his lasting impact on the sport.
During his tenure in Lexington, Smith steered the Wildcats to five Southeastern Conference regular‑season titles and five SEC tournament crowns, compiling a 263‑win record that placed him among the program’s most successful coaches.
His teams posted at least twenty‑two victories in each season from 1998 through 2007, a streak that underscored his ability to sustain excellence while mentoring future NBA talent.
Beyond Kentucky, Smith’s coaching journey took him to Tulsa, Georgia, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Memphis and High Point, where he added 379 more wins, bringing his career total to 642.
The 2026 Hall of Fame Class
The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on October 22 in Kansas City, Missouri, where Smith will be joined by fellow inductees such as former Villanova coach Jay Wright, longtime Kansas mentor Ted Owens, BYU star Danny Ainge, Michigan standout Glen Rice and UCLA legend Walt Hazzard.
Smith’s induction not only celebrates his championship pedigree but also highlights the broader narrative of coaches who have shaped college basketball across multiple eras and institutions.
