Gary L. Wilson, a former Duke University football letterman and Trustee Emeritus, died this week at the age of 86, leaving behind a career that spanned collegiate athletics, corporate governance and generous philanthropy.
Early Athletic Years
Wilson wore the Blue Devil uniform during the 1960 and 1961 seasons, contributing to back‑to‑back Atlantic Coast Conference championships. The 1960 team capped the year with a Cotton Bowl victory and finished the Associated Press poll at No. 10, while the following year Duke repeated as ACC champion and ended the season ranked No. 20 after a win over Notre Dame.
He pursued his undergraduate studies at Trinity College, graduating in 1962, a path that intertwined his academic pursuits with the formative years of his athletic career.
Board Leadership and Corporate Roles
Wilson’s commitment to Duke extended beyond the field. He served on the Duke University Board of Trustees from 1993 through 2005, guiding the institution during a period of growth and transformation. Outside the university, he chaired Northwest Airlines Corporation and held seats on the boards of The Walt Disney Company and Yahoo! Inc., bringing corporate insight to both nonprofit and for‑profit realms.
Philanthropy and Lasting Impact
His generosity manifested in tangible gifts to the campus landscape, most notably the Wilson Gate at Wallace Wade Stadium and the Wilson Recreation Center, facilities that continue to serve students and athletes. Colleagues and alumni remember him as a steadfast supporter of Blue Devil athletics and a mentor to countless young leaders.
Wilson is survived by his wife, Jane, their three sons, grandchildren, a great‑granddaughter and a nephew, as well as extended family who cherished his stories and guidance. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be directed to Strive, an organization that reflects his commitment to community development.
