Former Memphis coach Tubby Smith has been selected for the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2026 class, a testament to a career that blended relentless competitiveness with transformative leadership.
Hall of Fame Induction Set for Kansas City
The ceremony will take place on October 22 at the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Missouri, where Smith will join an elite group of coaches celebrated for their impact on the game.
Smith’s journey through college basketball reads like a masterclass in adaptability. From his early days at Tulsa and Georgia, he rose to prominence at Kentucky, where in his sophomore season he captured the 1998 national championship and forged a 642‑370 record that still ranks among the most durable in Division I history.
Over his stints at five different programs — Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Memphis and High Point — he became one of only four coaches to guide as many as five schools to the NCAA tournament, a feat that underscores his ability to rebuild and sustain success across diverse environments.
His most recent chapter at Memphis concluded with a 40‑26 record over two seasons, a period marked by a 16‑out‑of‑17 stretch of NCAA tournament appearances that highlighted his consistent ability to elevate teams toward March Madness.
The Hall of Fame recognition not only honors Smith’s personal achievements but also reflects the broader narrative of coaches who have shaped the sport’s evolution, linking his legacy to figures such as Jay Wright, Ted Owens, Danny Ainge, Glen Rice, Walt Hazzard, Kevin Henderson and Penny Hardaway, all of whom share a place in basketball’s historical tapestry.
