Tim Frick has been appointed chief financial officer of the College Football Playoff (CFP), bringing a deep reservoir of accounting and strategic finance experience to a role that oversees the organization’s monetary and operational backbone.
Frick joined the CFP in 2016 as director of finance and business operations, quickly expanding his purview to include human resources, risk management, contract negotiations and merchandising. His tenure at Baker Hughes, where he spent four years in internal audit and corporate finance, and a two‑year stint at Grant Thornton, equipped him with the analytical rigor and industry insight that Rich Clark, executive director of the CFP, says will be invaluable as the playoff navigates an increasingly complex financial landscape.
A Strategic Appointment
Clark highlighted Frick’s blend of technical expertise and leadership, noting that his appointment reflects the board’s confidence in his ability to steer the CFP’s fiscal strategy while supporting the growth of college football’s premier event.
Frick expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing his commitment to leveraging sound financial practices to enhance the playoff’s sustainability and fan experience. He also took the chance to acknowledge the mentorship he received from Dave Marmion, who recently transitioned to the role of president and chief executive officer of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
Marmion’s move to the Cotton Bowl Classic marks the end of a decade‑long partnership between the CFP and its former finance chief. The transition comes as the playoff continues to expand its footprint, with upcoming broadcasts and sponsorship deals poised to test the organization’s fiscal agility.
