During a recent appearance on the SEC Network, former Alabama head coach Nick Saban offered a surprisingly upbeat assessment of the Florida Gators’ prospects under new head coach Jon Sumrall. The veteran strategist, who now works as an analyst for ESPN, said he was encouraged by the direction the program is taking.
Saban’s comments centered on the quality of the coaching staff that Sumrall has assembled. He singled out offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, noting that Faulkner’s experience in guiding Georgia Tech’s offense to an 11th‑ranked position in total yards last season gives him a proven track record.
The former Alabama coach also turned his attention to the quarterback position, pointing to Aaron Philo, a transfer from Georgia Tech, as a player with upside. Philo, who logged 938 passing yards and two touchdowns over two seasons as a backup, could provide a new spark for the Gators’ aerial attack.
Saban did not stop at the quarterback. He highlighted running back Jadan Baugh, a junior who ranked third in the SEC in rushing last season with 1,170 yards, as a cornerstone of the offense.
