Rabe’e Ata Juma’a Alqaq, a member of a Jordanian delegation of roughly 20 to 25 athletes staying at Rice University’s Martel College, was reported missing after he told teammates he was going for a walk late Saturday night and never returned to his room.
Authorities later located Alqaq in Bridgeview, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, after determining that he had traveled to the Chicago area on his own by bus.
Local officials and federal partners have said they do not suspect any foul play, though the motive behind his departure remains unclear and will be investigated further.
