A Hall of Fame Induction
Danny Ainge, a former star at Brigham Young University and longtime executive in professional basketball, was recently selected for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, a testament to a career that blended college brilliance with NBA championships.
At BYU from 1977 to 1981, Ainge led the Cougars to their most successful NCAA tournament run in 1981, a journey highlighted by a game‑winning shot against Notre Dame and a four‑time All‑WAC First Team selection that earned him Player of the Year honors.
From Player to Executive
Drafted by the Boston Celtics, he contributed to two championship teams in 1984 and 1986 and was recognized as an All‑Star in 1988 before stints with the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings and Portland Trail Blazers, compiling a 14‑year NBA résumé that included 1,042 games and a 38 % three‑point shooting clip.
After retiring as a player, Ainge transitioned to coaching, guiding the Phoenix Suns from 1996 to 1999 with a 60.2 % win rate, and later served as the Celtics’ general manager from 2003 to 2021, where he helped assemble the 2008 title‑contending roster.
He now oversees basketball operations for the Utah Jazz as chief executive, a role that places him at the helm of the franchise that once drafted him and where his induction will be celebrated alongside the university that launched his legend.
