Orlando “Tubby” Smith, the charismatic former Kentucky Wildcats coach, has been selected for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class, a testament to a career that reshaped college basketball.
Smith’s ascent began in spectacular fashion during his inaugural season at Kentucky, where he guided the Wildcats to the 1998 national championship, a feat that instantly placed him among the sport’s most celebrated newcomers.
Over the next decade he coached the Wildcats from 1998 through 2007, compiling a 642‑370 record and delivering five Southeastern Conference regular‑season titles and five SEC tournament championships, while earning five conference coach‑of‑the‑year honors.
