Opening Day at the National Training Complex
USA Baseball’s 2026 16U/17U National Team Development Program began its competition slate on Tuesday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, drawing a crowd of eager scouts and fans.
Team Navy surged ahead early when Noah Jarolimek launched a solo home run to center field in the top of the first, setting a 1‑0 tone. Derek Vazquez later crossed home plate on a pickoff miscue, and Chase Fillman’s bases‑loaded walk extended the lead to 2‑0. Lennex Minor’s RBI triple trimmed the margin, but a defensive error allowed Kensen Johnson to tie the game at 2‑2 before Isaias Torres delivered a 397‑foot grand slam that put Navy up 6‑2.
Across the field, Team Grey posted an 8‑2 victory over Team Light Blue, capitalizing on a double steal that placed Carter Nash and Landon King in scoring position, a sequence that Mateo Mier finished with a clutch single. The Grey pitching staff, anchored by Gavin Chakar’s five strikeouts in two innings, combined for twelve strikeouts without surrendering an earned run, underscoring the day’s dominant arms.
Standout performances extended beyond the scoreboard. Noah Jarolimek finished the day with three runs scored, while Keona Barraza and Macgraw VanWormer each collected multiple hits, Barraza going 2‑for‑4 and VanWormer posting a 2‑for‑3 line. The depth of talent on display highlighted the program’s role as a proving ground for the next generation of collegiate and professional prospects.
The action will continue on Wednesday, July 29, when the Development Program reconvenes at the same Cary complex for additional matchups, promising more high‑stakes baseball under the summer sun.
