A Tournament Like No Other
Indiana's men's basketball squad captured the gold medal at the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru, finishing a tournament that proved far easier than many had anticipated.
The Hoosiers were slated for six matchups but saw two opponents withdraw, leaving them with just four games. That compressed schedule gave the team ample time to explore the host city and engage in activities unrelated to basketball.
Head coach Darian DeVries admitted that the extra downtime was a welcome bonus, even if it meant the trip was less basketball‑focused than originally planned. "We got to see a bit of Lima, take in some sights, and just enjoy the experience," he said.
While the opposition offered little resistance, the team still encountered defensive lapses that highlighted areas needing refinement. The games served as a laboratory for tweaking rotations, sharpening the transition game and polishing offensive rebounding.
Freshman standouts Vaughn Karvala, Prince‑Alexander Moody and Trevor Manhertz impressed observers with their energy and skill, suggesting a promising future for the program. DeVries praised their hard work and the chemistry they displayed on the court.
After the medal ceremony the squad will enjoy an extended break, with official practices not resuming until late September. Exhibition matches are slated for October, giving the players a chance to build on the momentum generated in Peru.
