The Maryland American Legion baseball tournament concluded with a dramatic finale as Funkstown Post 211 edged Fort Cumberland Post 13 2‑1 to claim the state championship. The victory marks the culmination of a flawless run through the bracket, during which the team posted a combined score of 49‑16 across six games.
Manager Bobby Keller, who has guided the club throughout the season, praised the collective effort that made the title possible. “The guys played with confidence and poise,” Keller said, noting that the team’s chemistry was evident from the opening game.
Key Performances on the Field
Shawn Higgins earned the win on the mound, limiting Fort Cumberland to one run on six hits while walking three batters over 6 ⅔ innings. His effort helped preserve a tight game and gave the offense the breathing room it needed.
George Mantz was among the standout contributors, delivering clutch hits that shifted momentum in critical moments. His impact was echoed by a lineup that combined power and precision, driving in runs at decisive junctures.
The tournament also showcased emerging talent from the roster. Players such as Cameron Face, Hayden Hose, Grant Semler and Derek Kline each played pivotal roles, while additional contributors including Kohen Madden, Dane Van Slyke, Coye Resh, Gavin Ramarge, Ryan Darr, Jared Dangerfield, Gavin Blumenauer and Mason Oates added depth to the squad.
Funkstown’s schedule was not limited to the state final. The team opened with a 14‑1 triumph over the Severn Patriots, followed by a 14‑8 win against the Naptown Tides and a 13‑2 victory over Sharptown Post 218. A 6‑4 victory over La Plata Post 82 kept the perfect record intact before the championship game.
Looking Ahead to the Mid‑Atlantic Regional
With the state title secured, Funkstown Post 211 will travel to Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, to compete in the Mid‑Atlantic Regional beginning August 5. The regional tournament will pit the champions of several states against one another in a bid to advance to the national finals.
The upcoming competition represents a new challenge for a team that has remained undefeated throughout the state circuit. Coach Keller expressed optimism, stating that the experience gained in Maryland will be invaluable as they face tougher opponents on the regional stage.
