The current agreement, which is set to expire after the 2027 season, has been under discussion throughout the summer as Beth Goetz and Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard have held multiple meetings to solidify the future of the matchup.
Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti echoed the sentiment, stating that preserving long‑standing rivalries like the Cy‑Hawk game is essential to the conference’s identity and to the fans who cherish them.
The rivalry, which has seen Iowa hold a 14‑13 edge over the past 27 seasons, has recently tilted in Iowa State’s favor, with the Cyclones winning three of the last four meetings. Since 2010, the home team has claimed only four victories, underscoring the competitive balance.
Under former head coach Hayden Fry, Iowa posted a 15‑game winning streak in the series from 1982 to 1997, a period that many fans still recall fondly.
The next chapter will be written on September 12, when Iowa hosts Iowa State at Kinnick Stadium. The game has already sold out, reflecting the enduring passion of the fan base.
