A Veteran Coach Joins the Gators
Greg McMahon, a 40‑year veteran of college and professional football, has been named special teams analyst for the Florida Gators, bringing a wealth of experience that spans four decades of coaching at the highest levels of the game. His career includes stints as special teams coordinator at Tulane and LSU, as well as eleven years on the New Orleans Saints’ staff where he helped shape units that consistently ranked among the nation’s best.
McMahon’s résumé reads like a who’s who of football excellence: he coordinated units at Tulane that captured the 2023 American Athletic Conference title and ranked among the nation’s top special teams, while his tenure at LSU produced back‑to‑back seasons in which his groups led the league in points scored on kicks. His time with the Saints included a pivotal role in the team’s Super Bowl XLIV comeback, where a daring onside kick shifted momentum in the Saints’ favor.
The Gators have bolstered their special teams roster with three fresh faces — kicker Patrick Durkin, punter Alec Clark and long snapper Carter Milliron — each of whom arrived with standout performances in the American Athletic Conference and the nation’s punting rankings. Durkin topped the conference in field‑goal accuracy and attempts per game, while Clark’s average of 46.5 yards per punt placed him among the country’s elite.
Johnathan Galante, the team’s special teams coordinator, stresses that organization and communication are the cornerstones of success, noting that head coach Jon Sumrall’s deep respect for the unit’s work ethic has set a tone of collective accountability. Together, they hope to translate McMahon’s proven formulas into immediate impact on the field.
The Gators open their season on September 5 against Florida Atlantic, a matchup that will serve as the first test of McMahon’s system and the new talent he inherits.
