A Strategic Addition to the Crease
The Detroit Red Wings announced the signing of restricted free agent goaltender Carter Gylander to a one-year contract, a move that reinforces the club’s depth between the pipes.
While the financial terms remain undisclosed, the agreement reflects the organization’s confidence in the 25-year-old’s trajectory after a breakout season in the ECHL and a brief but impressive stint in the American Hockey League.
Gylander spent the majority of the 2025-26 campaign with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, where he posted a 20-9-5 record, a 2.78 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage, numbers that caught the eye of the Red Wings’ scouting staff.
He also appeared in eight games for the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, compiling a 7-0-1 record, a 1.62 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage, showcasing his ability to translate success across levels.
Drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Gylander has built a professional résumé that includes a 40-18-10 record with a 2.70 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in 68 ECHL appearances, as well as a 9-1-1 mark with a 2.15 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage in ten AHL games.
Former general manager Steve Yzerman, who remains a key figure in the franchise’s hockey operations, highlighted the importance of a deep goaltending pool, noting that Gylander joins a cadre that includes Carter Mazur, Michal Postava, Trey Augustine, Sebastian Cossa, Michal Pradel and Michal Orsulak.
The addition is viewed as a strategic step as the Red Wings aim to solidify a netminding corps that can support both the current roster and future prospects, a plan that aligns with the organization’s long-term vision.
