The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) has unveiled its section realignments for the 2026‑27 and 2027‑28 school years, reshaping competition brackets across a host of sports.
Basketball realignments
Among the most notable moves, Sewickley Academy, the recent Class 2A boys basketball champion, will step up to Class 4A, while Oakland Catholic, the defending Class 4A girls champion, will ascend to Class 5A.
Neshannock, the girls Class 2A champion, is slated to move up to Class 3A, and Neighborhood Academy, the boys Class A champion, will jump to Class 2A. Imani Christian, after capturing back‑to‑back Class A titles, will drop back to Class A.
Wrestling shifts
In wrestling, the league reported a shift in enrollment numbers that now places 48 schools in Class 2A versus 40 in Class 3A.
Five programs — Belle Vernon, Blackhawk, Ringgold, Waynesburg and West Mifflin — will drop from Class 3A to Class 2A, while Beaver County Christian and Fort Cherry will field Class 2A teams after operating as independents last season. Three former independents — Laurel Highlands, New Castle and Woodland Hills — will compete in Class 3A this year.
The WPIAL plans to release basketball schedules on May 26, wrestling brackets on May 27, and the swimming and rifle calendars on May 28, giving teams a clear timeline for the upcoming season.
These realignments set the stage for new rivalries and fresh competitive narratives as schools adjust to their revised classifications.
