Los Angeles authorities announced the arrest of Michael Avila, a 20‑year‑old soccer coach, on July 28 on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor in Westminster. Avila, a resident of Norwalk, faces a slate of felonies that include lewd acts with a child, contacting a minor with the intent to commit a sex offense, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, and possession of child pornography.
According to Westminster Police Commander Andy Stowers, the alleged abuse occurred in February within the 13500 block of Edward Street, though the victim’s gender has not been disclosed. The investigation revealed that Avila was employed at a high school in the Los Angeles area, though the institution’s name has not yet been released.
Investigators have urged anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward, providing two phone numbers for tips: 714‑548‑3767 for the police department and 855‑TIP‑OCCS for Orange County Crime Stoppers, which will accept anonymous information.
