Athlon Sports Honors Owls' Standouts
Athlon Sports' annual college football preview magazine has recognized five members of the Rice University football program, highlighting a season of growth and achievement for the Owls.
Quinton Jackson, the 2025 MVP, led the team in rushing with 889 yards and amassed 1,225 all‑purpose yards, a performance that also included a 73‑yard run and a 75‑yard reception in the same game. His explosive play earned him a second‑team All‑Conference selection.
Joining Jackson on the third team are Jesus Machado Jr., a former Tulane standout who transferred to Rice and quickly made an impact, and Luke Miller, the ever‑present Split Tackle on the offensive line who started all 13 games and allowed just one sack on 267 pass plays. Dillan Botts, another interior lineman, rounded out the recognition with a 69.4 grade from Pro Football Focus and a strong presence on the defensive front.
Daveon Hook, limited to five games because of injuries, still managed 22 tackles and recorded his first career sack against UTSA, while also matching a career high with seven tackles versus UConn. His perseverance underscores the depth of talent on the roster.
Looking Ahead to a September Kickoff
The Owls open the 2026 season on September 5 against HCU at Rice Stadium, a game that will kick off a schedule filled with promising matchups. Season ticket packages start at $109 per seat, offering families a chance to experience the action from the stands.
Beyond individual accolades, the program’s momentum is bolstered by its academic partnerships and community outreach, reinforcing Rice’s commitment to excellence on and off the field.
