Purdue basketball opened its Canadian tour with a convincing 79-48 win over Calgary, a game that highlighted a shift toward a more defensive mindset.
The Boilermakers shot just 25% from three-point range, yet they outscored the Flames by a wide margin, scoring 20 points off turnovers and limiting Calgary to only two points in the opening stretch of the second quarter.
Defensive Leaders Step Up
Antione West Jr. paced the effort with a team-high 14 points and four steals in the first quarter, while Daniel Jacobsen contributed four of the nine blocks, reinforcing his role as a rim protector.
Raleigh Burgess, starting at center, added two blocks of his own, including a timely swat on a back-door drive that illustrated the team’s growing instinctive defense.
Assistant coach P.J. Thompson singled out West as the squad’s best on-ball defender, noting that the collective focus on defense is becoming a cornerstone of the program.
With an influx of defensive-minded players and freshmen still mastering responsibilities, the Boilermakers are shaping an identity that could carry them deep into the upcoming season.
