The 2026 Texas high school baseball season in the Big Country region concluded with a flurry of accolades, as the Abilene Reporter‑News unveiled its All‑Big Country Super Team. Selections were derived from coach nominations, statistical performance, all‑district honors and overall team success, creating a snapshot of the area’s most influential contributors.
At the center of the celebration stands Aiden Shank, who was crowned MVP after guiding Gordon to the 1A UIL Baseball State Championship game. Shank’s all‑around impact was evident in his .418 batting average, 43 runs scored and 21 stolen bases, underscoring his dual threat at the plate and on the bases.
Pitching excellence was epitomized by George Ferguson, named Pitcher of the Year with a microscopic 0.10 ERA and 135 strikeouts. His dominance on the mound helped shape Gordon’s deep playoff run, while Ligon West’s coaching earned him Coach of the Year honors after back‑to‑back appearances in the state championship game.
Offensive standouts such as Gavin Brooks, who posted a .419 average and 55 runs, and Stoney Cooley, a defensive stalwart with a .409 average, highlighted the breadth of talent across the region. Newcomer Myles McCarty earned Newcomer of the Year after a .418 average and 43 runs, signaling a promising future for West Texas baseball.
District awards added another layer of recognition, with Colby Garrett capturing District 4‑5A Pitcher of the Year after a 7‑1 record and 1.08 ERA, and Brody Oliver securing Offensive Player of the Year in District 8‑2A with a .500 average. Ian Gruben’s 10‑1 record and 1.30 ERA earned him a Class 1A THSBCA All‑State nod, while Trot Jordan’s .734 average and 43 runs propelled him to District 6‑4A MVP honors.
The breadth of talent extended beyond a single school. Players from Hamlin, Cisco, Albany and other communities contributed memorable performances, from RJ Gomez’s .523 average to Stryker Reed’s .486 output that helped Gordon reach the state title game. Jack Nichols, Ethan Schindler and Jesse Nieto also posted impressive statistics that underscored the depth of competition across the region.
Mound dominance was a recurring theme, with Hunter Eddington’s 8‑3 record and 1.06 ERA, Gavin Colley’s 6‑2 record and 2.91 ERA, and Tucker Deal’s 2.15 ERA over 742⅔ innings illustrating the region’s pitching depth. Defensive contributions from Sterling Wilson, Brayden Walters and Hudson Tuley further enriched the narrative of a season defined by balanced excellence.
The All‑Big Country Super Team not only celebrates individual achievement but also reflects the collaborative spirit of West Texas baseball.
