Alex Iovacchini, a 2022 graduate of Western Wayne and former star player on the varsity soccer team, has been named the new head coach of the Western Wayne boys varsity soccer program, succeeding Matt Fitzsimmons who stepped down after more than two decades at the helm.
Iovacchini’s ascent was swift; he began as a volunteer assistant under Fitzsimmons and quickly earned a reputation as the youngest member of the coaching staff, bringing a fresh perspective and deep familiarity with the program’s culture.
A New Era for Western Wayne Soccer
The team finished the previous season with a strong 13‑3‑0 record, a testament to Fitzsimmons’ long‑term leadership, and now looks to build on that foundation under Iovacchini’s direction.
Returning standouts such as Eric McGrath, who will anchor the defensive backfield, and midfield dynamo Cole Combs, who contributes both offensively and defensively, give the squad immediate depth. Ben McCleland, touted as one of the league’s most promising pure scorers, is expected to lead the attack.
The schedule opens on September 8 at Gregory the Great, and includes marquee matchups against Honesdale, Dunmore and Mountain View that will likely shape the team’s Division II standing.
Practice officially began on August 17, marking the start of a season that many hope will usher in a new chapter for Western Wayne soccer while honoring the legacy of a coach who defined an era.
