A Fast‑Break Philosophy Inspired by International Experience
Voigt, who spent more than two decades coaching in the NBA G League and abroad — including stints in Norway, Germany, Egypt, Nigeria and Angola — says the new scheme will blend defensive intensity with an aggressive, fast‑break style that forces opponents into traps and turnovers.
The approach calls for kick‑ahead transitions, rapid ball movement and a willingness to shoot from distance, a philosophy inspired by the short possession lengths that helped BYU climb into the top 50 nationally.
Key contributors such as Damari Wheeler‑Thomas, Aginaldo Neto and Bham Buom are expected to thrive under the faster rhythm, even as guard Ty Rodgers, the Illinois transfer, remains sidelined by a long‑term knee injury.
Pressuring Opponents to Create Turnovers
Last season Boise State ranked 315th out of 365 teams in opponent turnovers per game, a statistic that Voigt hopes to improve by imposing higher pressure and creating more forced errors.
By encouraging the squad to chase turnovers and push the ball upcourt at speed, Voigt aims to turn defensive stops into immediate scoring chances, a tactic that could narrow the gap against traditionally stronger opponents.
Leon Rice, the program’s head coach, praised Voigt’s blend of experience and innovation, noting that the new strategy could reshape the team’s identity and elevate its competitiveness in the Mountain West.
