The Edwardsville Tigers capped a historic campaign this spring, finishing 16‑5‑2 and sharing the Southwestern Conference championship before advancing to the state tournament for the third time in program history. Their run included a second fourth‑place finish in school annals, a feat that underscored the team’s consistency and depth.
At the heart of that run was senior midfielder Anna Maxim, whose defensive reliability and tireless work rate set a standard for the entire squad. Coach Justin Bernaix repeatedly praised Maxim’s consistency, noting that she logged 80 minutes in nearly every match and reached the 100‑minute mark in overtime battles, embodying the grit the Tigers needed to succeed.
Maxim’s impact was most evident in the clutch moments that defined the Tigers’ postseason. She struck the decisive goal in the sectional championship against Peoria Notre Dame, converted a penalty kick in the Bloomington Super‑Sectional, and forced a dramatic equaliser against nationally ranked New Trier with just over eight minutes remaining, preserving a hard‑fought tie.
Her offensive contributions were matched by academic excellence. Maxim earned all‑academic honors, was named an Illinois State Scholar, and graduated summa cum laude, ranking second in her senior class. The midfielder will study biomedical engineering at Florida, though she has decided not to continue her soccer career at the collegiate level.
Honors and Accolades
The season’s accolades poured in as Maxim collected MVP honors from the Intelligencer, earned a spot on the All‑SWC first team, and received recognition from the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association, which placed her on its all‑academic list. Such distinctions reflected both her athletic prowess and her commitment to scholarly achievement.
Beyond the field and the classroom, Bernaix believes Maxim will remain woven into the local soccer fabric, perhaps through intramurals or community leagues, ensuring that her competitive spirit endures in the Edwardsville area. Though her collegiate soccer chapter closes, Maxim’s next step is a biomedical engineering program in Florida, where she hopes to blend scientific curiosity with the discipline honed on the pitch. The coming years will likely see her apply the same tenacity that defined her high school career to new challenges in research and innovation.
