Staggered Practice Start Dates
The countdown to the new high school football season is underway in Southeast Texas, with teams gearing up for fall camp. Schools that conducted spring workouts will open their fall training on August 10, while the rest of the region begins practice on Monday.
Only programs in Class 6A and 5A were permitted to hold spring practices, which means those schools can start their extended camp earlier. The staggered schedule allows coaches to fine‑tune rosters and install schemes before the first games.
Safety Measures on the Field
A fresh set of UIL regulations now mandates the use of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature readings to gauge heat stress during practices. The metric combines temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation to provide a more accurate picture of how conditions affect athletes.
When the WBGT climbs, schools must shorten practice sessions, insert additional rest breaks and ensure ample hydration. These adjustments are designed to protect players from heat‑related illness while still allowing teams to make progress before the season.
Season Kickoff
The regular season is slated to open on August 28 for most local teams, marking the culmination of weeks of preparation. With safety protocols in place and practice schedules locked in, coaches are optimistic that the upcoming campaign will be both competitive and safe.
