The Iowa Hawkeyes entered the Big Ten Tournament facing a steep early hill, as Illinois erupted for four runs in the top of the first inning, only to answer with three runs in the bottom of the second.
A Rally Takes Shape
Max Burt, the redshirt sophomore catcher, ignited a two‑run double in the bottom of the second, pulling Iowa within one. Starting pitcher Maddux Frese steadied the ship, retiring the side in the second and third innings without allowing a run.
The Hawkeyes seized their first lead at 7‑6 when Burt’s sacrifice fly brought home the tying run with the bases loaded, a moment that shifted momentum.
Nerat’s Clutch Blast
In the seventh inning senior Joey Nerat delivered a three‑run homer that pushed the lead to 10‑6, providing the cushion needed for the remainder of the game.
Reliever Jaron Bleeker then shut the door, tossing five scoreless innings and surrendering just one run, preserving the victory.
Standout Performances
Caleb Wulf paced the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Burt and Nerat each added three RBIs, underscoring a balanced attack. The win improved Iowa to 33‑21 and set up a showdown with Michigan State in the winners bracket.
