South Dakota State University marked the start of construction on Dakota Layers Stadium, a 1,500‑seat soccer venue that will become the new home for the Jackrabbits in the fall of 2027. The groundbreaking ceremony brought together university leaders, coaches and donors, signaling a major milestone for the program.
The facility will boast a competition‑grade natural grass pitch, permanent grandstand, field lighting and a high‑definition videoboard. Its design, overseen by architect Joe Corvaia, draws on his experience with a variety of multipurpose athletic complexes.
Funding for the project came from a generous contribution by the Ramsdell family, whose involvement gave the university the momentum to move from concept to construction after years of discussion dating back to the early 2010s.

Athletic director Justin Sell and university president Barry Dunn highlighted the stadium’s role in student recruitment and campus life, noting that the adjacent locker‑room building will serve soccer, baseball and softball teams, creating a multi‑sport hub.
The Jackrabbits will still begin their 2026 campaign at Fishback Soccer Park, hosting an intrasquad scrimmage on July 31 before opening the regular season against Manitoba on August 13, while the new stadium prepares for its debut in August 2027.
Beyond the immediate benefits, the project reflects the university’s broader investment in athletics, reinforcing a soccer program that has captured three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and a Division I conference title, a legacy overseen in part by the Summit League and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
